28 September, 2020

What do you think is our nervous system made of? It consists of huge amounts of nerve fibres and cells. And what is the role of these nerve cells and fibres and the nervous system as a whole? They work a transmission medium for impulses to be carried to and from one part of the body to another. The nervous system is divided into two parts. One is the central nervous system and the other is the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system is responsible for handling different activities of the body and consists of the spinal cord and the brain. On the other hand, the peripheral nervous system consists of every nerve that is located outside the spinal cord and brain.

Improper functioning of and a problem with any of these parts or their components can cause disease that can have a negative impact on your life. One of the problems that you may encounter due to these reasons is the formation of a brain tumour. Read more to find out to read more about how neurology helps in treating brain tumour.

To begin with, let us tell you that neurology is a branch of medical science that involves the diagnosis and treatment of any disease that is associated with the nervous system. So you would find neurology useful in problems like muscle weakness, dizziness, coordination problems, sensation changes, and others. Another condition that has a lot to do with our nervous system is a brain tumour. Not all brain tumours are cancerous in nature. But a few are and they need immediate and proper brain tumour treatment.

A brain tumour is formed when brain cells start growing abnormally. Generally, new cells grow only when old cells die. But in case of a tumour, cells continue to grow even when there are enough cells already present. Brain tumours don’t always develop inside our brain. They sometimes come from other parts of the body too. How a tumour will impact the nervous system depends entirely on how fast it is growing?

Test available for brain tumour diagnosis

  • Imaging tests: PET scan, MRI, and CT scan are the most common tests that are used to diagnose brain tumours.
  • Neurological test: It first looks for any abnormalities in hearing, coordination, vision, and other areas. If the results are positive, it means a brain tumour is present.
  • Biopsy: This test helps in finding out whether a tumour is cancerous or not.

Brain tumour treatment involves a multidisciplinary team of experts – neurologists, radiation oncologists, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, neuro-oncologists, and other specialists.
