Bladder cancer

14 August, 2020

The Indian medical sector has made significant progress when it comes to diagnosing cancer and mitigating its effects. All of this was possible thanks to the efforts of Indian doctors and medical institutions like RGCIRC of Delhi. This post will take a close look into why RGCIRC Delhi is leading when it comes to bladder cancer treatment! Read on to know more!

Bladder cancer affects the inner lining of the urinary bladder – a hollow muscular sac that acts as a storage compartment for urine. In later stages, cancer may or may not spread to the surrounding parts of the urinary tract drainage system. My brother got diagnosed with the disease.

Symptoms of Bladder Cancer

  • Blood in the urine (otherwise known as hematuria)
  • Pain felt by the patient during passing urine
  • Pain in the pelvic region
  • Unexplained back pain

What caused this?

Well, according to the doctor, my brother came down with the disease due to his smoking habit and exposure to certain chemicals, since he works at Bengal Chemicals, Kolkata, as a supervisor.

What stage was he in?

His condition has progressed to stage 0is!

Treatment

Bladder cancer treatment varies with each stage. It is easy to get treatment for this type of cancer here in India. One of the most prominent medical institutions here in India is the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre.

Thankfully, my brother took a prompt decision to head over here at Delhi and get admitted at RGCIRC. Their team here dedicated to the diagnosis of Urinary Bladder Cancer takes a unique approach for each case. Their team consists of –

I believe providing evidence-based treatment is the forte of the administration running RGCIRC. A team of doctors took note of several factors while choosing a treatment for my brother.

Some of those factors are

  • The stage of cancer
  • The age of my brother
  • The medical history (if any) of my brother – before even administering or even finalizing a treatment plan for him

Treatment provided for Cancer

  • Hyperthermic Intravesical Chemotherapy (HIVEC)
  • Open/Robot-Assisted Cystoprostatectomy
  • Intracorporeal/Extracorporeal ileal Conduit/Orthotopic Neobladder – as a treatment for urinary bladder cancer.
  • Endoscopic bladder tumour resection
  • Radical Cystectomy
  • Chemotherapy and
  • Immunotherapy

Furthermore, they also provide stage-wise treatment to their patients who are diagnosed with bladder cancer. Here is a simplified rundown of the same:

  • Stage 0 bladder cancer – is treated by Transurethral Resection (TURBT) with fulguration. This treatment session will be followed by intravesical therapy within a day after the initial treatment session.
  • Stage 0a bladder cancer – is treated by partial or complete cystectomy. Cystectomy means removing the bladder from the patient’s body. It depends on the spread of the tumour(s) as well as its size.
  • Stage 0is bladder cancer – is treated by intravesical BCG after TURBT.
  • Stage 1 bladder cancer – is treated by Transurethral Resection (TURBT) with fulguration, intravesical BCG, intravesical chemo or cystectomy.
  • Stage 2 bladder cancer – is treated by Transurethral Resection (TURBT), radical cystectomy or partial cystectomy.
  • State 3 bladder cancer – is treated by Transurethral Resection (or TURBT), radical cystectomy, partial cystectomy or chemotherapy.
  • Stage 4 bladder cancer – is treated by chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery or cystectomy.

Since my brother’s cancer progression had reached stage 0is, he was treated by intravesical BCG after TURBT. After the treatment sessions concluded, we were asked to connect with specialist for follow up sessions. My brother is out of danger now! We often take him to Delhi for routine check-ups. I am so grateful to RGCIRC and the whole team that took care of my brother!
