Cancer

10 March, 2021

One of the most difficult issues of the twenty-first century is finding a cancer cure. It’s also unclear if scientists will be able to discover a cancer cure by the year 2021. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that substantial progress has been made in the last two decades to cure cancer, if not from the onset, after it has been diagnosed.

Technical advancements have been made – from advanced research to the development of specialised tools – to assist cardiologists in testing, diagnosing and treating cancer, as well as offering a reasonably simple approach to improving things. As a result, cancer patients and their physicians have more alternatives, with various more on the way.

Here are the top four most recent scientific advances in the pursuit of cancer treatment by RGCIRC, properly diagnosing it early on and making life simpler for those who are already affected by this condition.

1. Customizing Cancer Vaccines

Cancer occurs due to a genetic mutation in cells, believe it or not!  Cancer crops up when healthy cells start transforming into tumour cells in various parts of the body. Cancer is much more complicated than it seems. Since each cell’s growth is unique, this disease has a wide range of severities, each of which can entail individualised attention, treatment and medication.

“Mutations are random,” says Sean Marett, the CBO of BioNTech, a German immuno-oncology firm. If you equate one patient’s tumour to another, it’s doubtful that you’ll find a match.

This is the primary reason why BioNTech is progressing forward with the production of customised vaccines that will address all types of cell growth. With customized cancer vaccines, cancer patients are likely to improve their condition effectively. This is because personalized vaccines will be created as per the individual’s cancer condition. So, these vaccines will be more effective in treating unique cancer, as per an individual’s existing condition.

2. Advanced Targeted Therapies

In the last decade, Auto-Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has been one of the most severe diseases. However, by integrating medicines that were designed to treat various targeted diseases, it resulted in a significant treatment success that was eventually able to reduce the number of disease carriers.

Now, researchers have discovered that using a similar trial and error approach to cancer could be helpful. Breakthroughs in biology can use the computer data to forecast which particularly targeted drugs would work best together to alleviate cancer symptoms.

3. Guiding Immune Cells

This cancer cell therapy received its first approval in 2018. CAR-T cell therapy is the science behind this therapy, and it involves taking a recipient’s immune T-cells and genetically modifying them to target a particular cancer antigen. There is no questioning the enormous success and advancement that CAR-T cell clinical studies have already shown.

This innovation guiding immune cells for doing the job will succeed gradually, particularly for patients who have already been treated for cancer but relapsed after a certain period and have tried many other treatment options with no effective result.  With this new technology, patients can find an easy cancer cure in the future without having to undergo painful and stressful existing cancer treatments in India like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, etc.

4. Using Microbes

Over the last 10 years, as technological developments paved the way, scientists discovered that many of the solutions we seek may be found right inside our bodies. One of these advancements was the discovery that our own body’s microbes, or the group of microorganisms that exist within our bodies, contribute not only to cancer but also to several other medical conditions.

“Elements of the microbiome play a role in suppressing an overactive immune system in inflammatory diseases and boosting a suppressed immune system in cancer,” says Christophe Bonny, CSO of a French company developing microbiome medicines.

Conclusion

Even if doctors, researchers and scientists are not able to find a complete cancer cure for cancer by the end of 2021, there’s still promise and hope in newer technologies opening more ways for cancer treatment in India. With the advancements in cancer treatments, it will be convenient and simper for cancer patients to cure the disease that had no easy cure decades ago.
