Overview
Pediatric Radiotherapy is a specialised branch of oncology.
In the multimodality treatment of paediatric cancers, indications for incorporating radiotherapy in the treatment protocol, include Rhabdomyosarcoma, Nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Ewing’s sarcoma, brain tumors, Neuroblastoma.
The goal of radiotherapy in the paediatric population is maximising tumor control and avoiding the sequelae of radiation in long term survivors.
The availability of sophisticated radiotherapy planning and delivery equipment enabled with Intensity Modulated radiotherapy, Image Guided Radiotherapy, Tomotherapy, Volumetric Arc therapy and interstitial brachytherapy allows us to deliver curative and safe radiation doses to this unique cancer population.
A thorough and meticulous immobilization is essential.
Multidisciplinary teamwork and coordination between a dedicated team of oncosurgeon, pediatric oncologist, radiation oncologist, radiologist, pathologist, and anesthetist, all having expertise in pediatric oncology goes a long way in achieving gratifying results.
