Breast Cancer

15 June, 2022

Breast cancer is a deadly disease that affects thousands of women every year. Early detection is critical to survival, but many women do not get regular breast cancer screenings. However, treatment options have improved in recent years, but the disease is still very difficult to fight.

Although breast cancer is a serious disease, there is a reason for hope. With early detection and breast cancer surgery, many women can beat the disease and go on to live long, healthy lives. So, while breast cancer is a deadly disease, it is not necessarily a death sentence. Ultimately, the point is to spread breast cancer awareness to help women understand the risks and signs of the disease.

What Is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women. It develops in the cells of the breast and can spread to other parts of the body. Breast cancer can be treated with surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy. There are also other treatment options such as targeted therapy and immunotherapy.

Breast Cancer Surgery

Breast cancer surgery is a type of surgery that is used to remove cancerous tissue from the breast. There are different types of surgery and the type of surgery that is right for you will depend on the stage of your cancer, the size of your tumour, and your overall health.

Breast cancer surgery may be done as a lumpectomy, which is a surgery to remove the tumour or a mastectomy, which is a surgery to remove the entire breast. Breast cancer surgery may also be done as a sentinel lymph node biopsy, which is a procedure to remove lymph nodes that may contain cancerous cells.

When Do Doctors Recommend Breast Cancer Surgery to Patients?

There are different types of breast cancer surgery and the decision on which type to recommend to a patient is made based on several factors.

  • The most common type of breast cancer surgery is a lumpectomy, which is usually recommended when the cancer is small and has not spread to the lymph nodes.
  • A mastectomy, which involves removing the entire breast, may be recommended when the cancer is larger or has spread to the lymph nodes.
  • In some cases, a combination of a lumpectomy and mastectomy may be recommended.

The final decision on which type of surgery to recommend is made by the doctor based on the individual case.

Risks and Potential Complications of Breast Cancer Surgery

There are several risks and potential complications associated with breast cancer surgery. These can include infection, bleeding, pain and stiffness around the breast area, swelling, change in the shape of the breast, and reactions to anaesthesia.

Additionally, there is the potential for serious complications, such as damage to the nerves or blood vessels. While a vast majority of patients will not experience any serious complications, it is important to be aware of the risks before undergoing surgery.

The Procedure Followed Before and After a Breast Cancer Surgery

The procedure followed before and after breast cancer surgery is very important. The surgeon will first do a physical examination and perform some tests, including a mammogram and biopsy. If the results of these tests show that breast cancer is present, the surgeon will discuss the different options for surgery with the patient.

During breast cancer surgery, the surgeon will make an incision in the skin and then remove the cancerous tissue. The surgeon will also remove any lymph nodes that are affected by cancer.

After the surgery, the surgeon will check for any signs of infection or bleeding. If there’s no reason for concern, the patient can go home once the surgeon is satisfied that everything is healing.

There are several risk factors for breast cancer, including age, family history, and lifestyle choices. However, the most important factor is simply being a woman. Breast cancer occurs almost exclusively in women, which is why it is so important for all women to be aware of the risks and get regular screenings. Cancer treatment in India is affordable and advanced. If you’re looking to get the surgery done, consider the best hospital for your treatment.
