Cancer

3 April, 2021

The number of cancer patients has been increasing not only in the United States but also across the world. Statistics reflect that the number of new cancer patients opting for diagnosis has kept on increasing in this past decade. Most cancer survivors deal with the harmful effects of cancer with their doctors.

Their respective doctors keep a check on their medical history to ensure that no new problem resurfaces. Understanding cancer statistics is vital if you are interested in finding out the new cancer treatments and their success rates which give you several treatment options to choose from.

Cancer Survival Rates

Cancer survival rates are important in cancer treatment as they give an insight into understanding the condition of the patient and developing a correct treatment plan accordingly.

  • Understanding Diagnosis

The experience of other people who have been in the same situations gives you and your doctor the correct idea of your diagnosis and know about the chances of your cancer getting cured. Age and medical history are some of the other important factors.

  • Developing Treatment Plans

Statistics can somewhat prove to people the efficiency of the treatment plan used on people suffering from the same stage and type of cancer and how they respond to treatment. This information is vital and helps in planning all the available options and choosing the best among them.

Statistics At A Glance

  • In 2020, there was a frightening number of 1,806,590 new cases of cancer diagnosed in the United States alone and out of them, 606,520 people succumbed to the disease.
  • The most common cancers are breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, thyroid cancer, and liver cancer.
  • Prostate, lung, and liver cancers together accounted for 43% of all cancers diagnosed in men in the year 2020.
  • Women usually suffer from breast, lung, and colorectal cancers, which accounts for an estimated 50% of all cancer diagnoses in women in the year 2020.
  • As per the programme by the National Cancer Registry around 25% to 32% of all cancers faced by women in India are some form of breast cancer.
  • In the year 2020, approximately 16,850 children aged between 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer and 1,730 out of them died from the disease.

Death rates for most types of cancer are decreasing in today’s world, thanks to the availability of modern options and progress in cancer treatment. However, the death rates of certain forms of cancer have neither changed nor increased.

The overall death rate has declined significantly since the 1990s as more and more patients are winning the fight against cancer. These trends prove that significant progress has been made against the disease, but there is plenty of work to do.

Surveillance, Epidemiology, And End Results Program

The National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program assembles and publishes cancer statistics and survival rates from hordes of cancer registries that approximately covers about 55% of the population of the United States. The official website of the SEER program provides detailed cancer statistics, which includes mortality rates, population statistics for regular types of cancer, customizable graphs and tables, and many other interactive tools.
