Prostate Cancer

17 April, 2022

The prostate gland is a small gland in the male body that is in the size of a walnut. It helps in the nourishment and transportation of the sperm by producing seminal fluid. Cancer that grows in the prostate gland of a male is referred to as prostate cancer.

There are various factors that can cause prostate cancer and increase the risk. Few things such as genes, DNA, race, and age cannot be changed and are not in your hands.

Prostate cancer mostly occurs in older people. The risk keeps on increasing as you get older. Along with your genetics, race also plays an important role. African American men are known to be highly prone to prostate cancer and have double the risk than white American men. The chance of prostate cancer may also increase if someone in your family (brother or father) has already got it.

You cannot do anything about it or control these risk factors. Let us focus on other risk factors that are in our hands and can be controlled.

Here are a few tips to overcome prostate cancer problems:

1. Prostate Cancer Screening Test

One of the best and most effective ways to prevent and treat prostate cancer is regular screening. If detected at an early stage, it is easier to treat this disease. The success rate of prostate cancer treatment is excellent in men who are diagnosed at an early stage.

2. Follow a Vegetarian Diet

It has been found that a diet that is low in fat is very healthy for the prostate gland and avoids the risk. You can avoid foods such as milk or meat and include a vegetarian diet in your meal. It’s not only healthy for the prostate gland but also healthy for the heart to reduce the risk of heart disease.

It also helps prevent the progression of existing cancer along with reducing the risk of other types of cancer.

3. Intake Sufficient Vitamin D

Many people are deficient in vitamin D and they are not aware of it. Vitamin D can protect you from prostate cancer and other types of health conditions also. Mushroom, wild salmon, and cod liver oil are good sources of vitamin D.

Almost every cancer specialist recommends soaking yourself in sunlight for at least 10 minutes a day to get vitamin D. Sunlight is the best source of vitamin D in the morning and evening. Afternoon sunlight is not good as it emits UV rays directly. Consult your doctor before taking any supplement or multivitamins.

4. Sexually Active Life

According to a study, it has been found that people who are sexually more active can reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 70%. More research is still going on in these areas, but few experts believe that ejaculation helps in detoxification of the body along with other inflammation-causing things.

5. Moderate Alcohol Consumption

If you drink alcohol at a moderate level, it can help you reduce the risk of prostate cancer. There are some health benefits associated with different types of alcohol such as vodka, gin, wine, or whiskey. It has anti-oxidant properties that can help fight cancer and reduce the risk.

6. Regular Exercise Routine

There are many benefits associated with regular exercise to the mind and body. It can help enhance the functions of the immune system and decrease inflammation. You should be more active rather than living a sedentary life to prevent prostate cancer.

7. Maintain Ideal Weight

A person can develop aggressive prostate cancer if he or she is obese. Too much weight is not good for body as it can cause a lot of other problems along with the risk of cancer. You can do exercise, cardio, yoga or running to control your weight and stay fit.

8. Improve Eating Habits and Diet

Experts believe that some foods can help in the prevention of prostate cancer and some foods can increase the risk of cancer.

  • Avoid Eating Charred Meat

Meat, which is cooked by grilling or frying at a very high temperature, is called charred meat. It is not recommended to eat such meat because some chemical compounds are formed in the process, resulting in cancer.

  • Include Soy and Green Tea in Your Diet

According to clinical trials, it is recommended that green tea can help reduce the risk of prostate cancer in highly risky patients. Soy has been found to decrease the PSA level in the body.

  • Add More Vegetables and Fruits in Your Diet

Make sure to include a large variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet in addition to greens and leafy vegetables. Tomato has been found to help in slowing the progression of cancer cells in the prostate gland due to an antioxidant called lycopene. Cauliflower, broccoli, and other cruciferous vegetables ensure protection against cancer due to the presence of a compound called sulforaphane.

  • Decrease Consumption of Unhealthy Fat

Eating less fat helps to lower the risk of cancer, especially by not eating saturated fats and transfats. Saturated fats and transfats are unhealthy and can cause several problems in the body. Mono-saturated fats are a healthy fat that should be consumed within the limit of the diet. Examples of healthy fats are fish, seeds, nuts, almonds, and omega 3 fatty acids.

If you follow these tips, it will help you prevent and overcome your prostate cancer problems.
