Overview
Field of infectious diseases has a very vast and important role in functioning of the hospitals. It is a subspecialty of internal medicine and an Infectious Diseases (ID) specialist undergoes a dedicated training for the same for 2-3 years after his/her post-graduation (MD) in internal medicine.

- Management of patients with infections due to multi-drug resistant organisms
- Fever of unknown origin
- Infections in immunocompromised hosts
- Febrile Neutropenia

- Formation of hospital antibiotic policy
- Infection control practices
- Hospital staff health (Needle stick Injury/Body Fluid Exposure/Exposure to a highly infectious patient)
- Outbreak management
- Antibiotic Stewardship (appropriate antibiotic usage)
- Solving diagnostic dilemmas
As RGCIRC is a dedicated cancer centre, patients are immunocompromised and prone to many infections. Role of an infectious disease specialist becomes all the more important in RGCIRC. He/she not only helps in treating these patients with infections but also helps them in preventing such infections.
