BW Health Care: Myths vs. Facts: What You Need to Know About Palliative Care

Published : 10 July, 2024

In an exclusive column for BW Health, Dr. Kinshuki Jain, Head of Pain Management, Palliative Care, and Home Care at RGCIRC, addresses common myths surrounding palliative care. Dr. Jain clarifies that palliative care enhances the quality of life for individuals with serious illnesses and their families by managing physical, emotional, social, and spiritual suffering. Despite its advantages, misconceptions remain. Contrary to popular belief, palliative care does not expedite death but can improve survival and quality of life for some patients. It is not restricted to cancer patients; it is also effective for chronic conditions such as heart failure and COPD and can be integrated at any stage of illness. Unlike hospice care, which focuses on end-of-life, palliative care is flexible and complements other treatments. Patients can begin or discontinue palliative care as needed without affecting their ongoing medical care.
