RETINOBLASTOMA
Overview
Retinoblastoma (RB), which is a malignant tumor of the embryonic neural retina, is the most common intra-ocular tumor of childhood. Retinoblastoma is the foremost example of genetic predisposition to cancer (1). Because of its rarity, many health professionals fail to identify early diagnostic clues, which are usually first noticed by the parents. In fact, in most cases, ophthalmologists establish the diagnosis, decide the local treatment modalities, and monitor the response. Only 3% of retinoblastomas are diagnosed by routine pediatric examination.
