WILMS TUMOR
Overview
Wilms tumor is the second most common abdominal tumor and constitutes 6% of all childhood cancer. It is an eminently curable tumor and with optimal treatment cure rates exceed 90% . The median age at diagnosis is 35 months for males and 42 months for females with unilateral disease . Associated congenital anomalies occur in approx. 10% of cases . Specific treatment depends on stage and histology of tumor . Staging is based on pathological confirmation of findings at surgery . Optimal treatment requires multimodality treatment with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation . Current management strategies are based on risk stratification aimed at reducing the morbidity of treatment for low risk patients, reserving more intensive treatment for selected high-risk patients
